Baronial Letter for May 2023

Arts and Science Project nights started this month, we are very exited to start up times for us to gather as a Barony and work on projects or classes. We will meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month.  All Saints Episcopal Church, located at 3500 McRae Blvd, El Paso, TX 79925, has graciously opened their fellowship hall to us from 6 P.M to 8 P.M.

Grand Outlanish is next weekend, Their Excellencies Carlos and Joella will be attending. There will still be Baronial Day at the park but no Populace gathering.

The Southern Outlands Full Moon Halfa is June 3rd, https://events.outlands.org/white-sands-full-moon-hafla/. Bring water, food, shade, drums, more water, friendship, and fighting gear. We will do our best to have tournaments, set up starts at 10 we hope to start dancing and drumming in the afternoon.

The Baronial Day on June 4th has been cancelled by the Knight Marshal so we can help support the Shire of Nahrun Kabirun’s demo at the Las Cruces Farmers market (more information to follow).

In preparation for Team Citadel traveling to Battlemoor we are looking for a food plan coordinator, some one to organize if there is interest in a shared group meal cooking and cleaning plan.

Arts and Sciences project day

Hello everyone! So it is finally time for Arts and Sciences. We have recently acquired a spot for Arts and Sciences day which will be every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month. The address will be 3500 McRae Blvd, El Paso, TX 79925 at All Saints Episcopal Church from 6 P.M to 8 P.M. Our first meeting will consist of talking about what kind of classes we would like to have, as well as a night of crafts. Bring whatever crafts you are currently working on or would like to start. I’ll be bringing sewing machines in order to teach others how to use it. April Populace Day theme

Who doesn’t love cookies? Do you have a favorite recipe you would like for your friends to taste? Bring a batch to the park this Sunday (4/30) as we join in fellowship for our monthly gathering. (BYOCoffee) We shall have a small court before fighting begins. Please note that we are still looking for an autocrat(s) for Citadel’s 40 year birthday celebration to be held in October. With the wind forecast to be calm(ish), bring a project you would like to work or or maybe ask advice about. We look forward to seeing everyone.

April Populace Day and Business meeting notes

The calendar showed the monthly business meeting happening after populace, which normally does not happen. The 4th Sunday happens before the 4th Thursday this month. So we will be moving Baronial day and Populace from April 23rd to April 30th. The April officer and business meeting will still be on the 27th. The Baronial Calendar has been updated.

Baronial Letter for April 2023

Ramadan Mubarak! Chag Pesach Sameach! Happy Easter!

Happy Holidays! 

This weekend commemorates many celebrations (Ramadan, Passover, and Easter), and we all celebrate the threads that unite us as members of the Citadel of the Southern Pass. We wish you all a happy and peaceful holiday season!

We are also joyful for the fun we had as a Barony this week, our Wednesday practice (first in a very long time) went well and it seems that Memorial Park works.  Friday, we went to go see the Dungeons and Dragons movie, and got free posters from the theater!

This upcoming week we have Wednesday practice at 6pm, a demo at Chapin High School Fan Con on Thursday, April 13 from 4-8pm, and on Sunday Baronial day and Practice.  We invite all who can attend the demo on Thursday; we will have tables set aside for arts and science displays and are encouraging all fencers to come out to do a demo with the high school fencing/dueling club. 

In two weeks, the Kingdom of the Outlands will have Crown Tournament hosted by the Barony of Fontaine dans Sable, one of the greatest twice a year displays of pageantry and prowess in the Kingdom.  Baron Carlos is going, and if anyone is interested in road tripping, please talk to him.  We will not have Baronial Day and Practice on the 22, due to scheduling conflicts, but we encourage everyone to go check out Comic Con downtown.

Baronial Letter for March 2023

Glorious Citadel, please know that we are unable to put into the appropriate words our gratitude and the joy felt by all in attendance at Investiture.  So many of our guests came up to praise our populace and some special guests for their hard work in creating an event that was so very memorable.  We would like to recognize those gentles for all the hard work they put in both before, during, and after the event.  If we erred with adding you here, please speak to us so that we may thank you again in person. We meant no slight.

Investiture XIV

The Barony of the Citadel of the Southern Pass invites all to come together to celebrate His Excellency Bernardo dei Medici’s final court and the Investiture of Maese Carlos Nieto de Andrade and Mistress Joella of Blue Lion’s Keep as the 14th Barón and Baroness of the Citadel of the Southern Pass.

Date: March 4th 2023

Gates open at 9 am and the event ends at 10 pm

From I-10: Head to US54, take exit 24 toward Fred Wilson Rd/Railroad Dr. Head North on Railroad Dr for 3.7 miles, turn left on to Hondo Pass Dr. Turn right onto Roanoke Dr, destination will be on the right .6 miles.

From US-54 (via New Mexico): Head south on US-54, exit McCombs and head south. Turn right on Sanders Ave, turn left on Roanoke Dr, destination will be on the left .1 miles

Site Fee: $20 Adults, $15 Members, Youth 17 to 15 are $15, children 14 and under are free. Feast is included in the fee. Pay Pay at the gate, Cash, or Checks made out to SCA Inc Citadel of the Southern Pass.

Merchant space will be available, $20 fee.

There will be a table set up where you can give/trade old books, garb, feast gear, or any other items that clutter up your house you no longer need.

We will have a photographer on site (donation based) to take photographs of the populace in garb.

The church asks that we not park on the Wren side of the building.

      • Roasted Parsnip and Honey Soup- Roasted parsnip drizzled with honey served with bread. Vegetarian, Welsh. 
      • Albondigas en tomate- Beef and pork meatballs served in a tomato sauce. Spanish.

      • Glamorgan Sausages- Shallow fried fritter with Cheddar and Havarti cheese. Vegetarian, Welsh.
      • Tortilla Española- Egg omelet with potatoes and onions served with aioli. Spanish.
    • Dessert
      • Pwdin Eva- Bed of baked apples topped with a vanilla sponge served with a vanilla custard. Welsh.
      • Tarta de Santiago- Almond based cake with a hint of lemon. Gluten Free, Spanish.
  • There will be a competition for Baronial Bard (rules below)
  • Site is dry.
  • Please no stakes in ground if you bring a shade.
  • We will be making a pin book with wooden covers as a A&S project. We only have supplies for 24 so please sign up at registration if you are interested.
  • Mistress Catriona will be teaching Court Dancing in the afternoon.
  • Members of the Citadel populace have graciously sponsored two martial tournaments.
    • Lord Seamus O’Glacain has sponsored the armored tournament with a Swiss five format (five rounds spear/polearm, sword & shield, Florentine, great sword, and then axe). Prize is the materials to make a new weapon or two.
    • Lord Frederick Fortescue has sponsored the rapier tournament (format to be determined). Prize is an assortment of feast gear.
    • We hope all can attend and those watching the combatants bring a small gift or favor to give to a combatant that inspires you or fights with honor.

Having seen the success at Coronation of the Craft Person’s Green, we would like to invite all artisans to set up space and teach/demonstrate their work or projects during the day at Citadel Investiture XIV (weather permitting outside).

What is a Craft Persons Green? Crafts Person Greens are interactive Arts & Sciences displays where the artisans are encouraged to teach at their display. All artisans at any level are encouraged to participate!

Coronet Candidate Q&A – 19 Nov 22


Greet the day Citadellians.

His Excellency Bernardo has asked me, Sir Berold, to moderate the Question & Answer event for those individuals who wish to be the next Coronet of our beloved Barony.

The candidates will be sat in front of the populace with 2 couples on each side of the moderator.

There will be a set protocol for the event –
*Individuals who have questions will raise their hands for recognition and MUST be recognized by the Moderator before they ask their question.
*Individuals may ask as many questions as they wish but may only ask one per recognition.
*Individuals may ask the panel the same question OR aim their query at an individual couple or couples.

Candidate couples are allowed TWO minutes between them to answer each question.
(Extra time may be allowed by His Excellency Bernardo)

Candidates will be announced at the event.

Site opens at 5:45pm
Q & A begins promptly at 6:00pm
Site will close no more than 45 minutes after the event has ended.
