Signoria? What’s That?

What is this Signoria thing? It was the system of government used by medieval Florence that combined the nobility with the rise of the burgher class into a way to govern the city-state. It took on several forms throughout its existence and worked in concert with other elected councils. Some councils were permanent while others were created as necessary, such as the Council of War, Council of Ten, Council of Eight, etc.

In Medieval Florence those elected to the Signoria known as the Priori were locked away in the building for the duration of their tenure … yeah, we’re not going to do that here …

How Does This Work For Citadel?

I believe it represents a tie in with how we operate with Officers, our wider Populace, and me as your Territorial Baron. You all are nobility in your own right and should have access to aspects of the decision making process. Citadel is not and will never be a sovereign nation, but I want you as the populace to feel empowered as nobles of our Kingdom to participate.

This won’t change the face of the Barony, but by providing historical context we can make the decision to do the “More Medieval Thing” in how we ensure we follow our mandate as the SCA to engage in historic recreation while tackling the nuances of a modern 501(c)(3) corporation.

Life in Medieval Florence centered around the plaza or the piazza to which the Signoria faced

Okay, So How Does this Work?

The Officers meetings are decisional in that we make decisions at them. Similar to other organizations or governmental bodies, the Signoria or Officers Meetings are where we make decisions for the Barony. The Seneschal and the Baron act as the executive officers managing the various final decisions, but the goal should be to build consensus among the populace. How that specifically will play out is that if new business arises, the conversation or discussion for that topic will be referred to Council, ie, if it is a Fighter matter it will be referred to the Fighter’s Council. This doesn’t mean only fighters can attend that council, it just means that those who want to discuss fighter things will know publicly when that meeting or discussion will take place.

The Councils

Councils center around the Officers and are their way to engage the populace and our greater membership. Sounds like a lot of extra work, right? Well, not really because they will happen either formally or informally at those scheduled events, ie, fighter practice, archery on Saturdays, or at an A&S event. Want to discuss matters of A&S? It should happen at A&S events. Are you primarily a fighter, but have an opinion on A&S matters? You should be engaging folks where they’re in their element to learn more about how the Barony does A&S.

What About Events?

Events should have their own planning Councils as well and this where those temporary councils come in handy. Want to plan an event? Assemble your Council and make it happen! This way we can ensure that we are doing the right thing for our members by offering publicly advertised and open meetings.

This Sounds More Complicated…

It sounds complicated, but it is more coordinated, organized, and proper in order to do the right thing by our members. Rather than longer meetings where people stop showing up because of the length of discussions and getting side tracked it allows for the Barony to delegate and divide the work. Councils meet in committee and come to the Signoria with complete proposals already having considered the Pros and Cons. Officers Meetings are not the time to weigh in; that’s what Council meetings are for specifically. Can’t make it to the Council Meetings? Each Officer needs to be open to receiving your feedback on matters their plan to discuss with their Council. By having very clear agendas and meeting notes you’ll be able to provide your feedback in written form via email or a conversation ahead of that meeting so that the Officer or Council Chairperson can present your input. It’s not perfect, but it is a whole lot more accessible.

Ultimately, It is Up to Us

At the end of the day, it is up to us as members of this organization to do the right thing and take care of those who are part of this team. This system ensures we are operating within the public good and are accessible and accountable to that public as required by being a 510(c)(3). I ask you to give this process a chance and participate. Governments are only as good as the people that oversee them. Systems and process are only as good as the people who run them. Your participation is critical to making this work no matter how we choose to organize ourselves.

April Signoria – Officers Meeting

Join us on Thursday, 25 April 2019 at 7 PM at Los Tres Gallegos for our next Officers Meeting. The rough timeline of events will see the meeting open with a segment for populace comments. Afterwards Officer Reports, Old Business, and New Business will continue for the agenda. The meeting will close with a summary.

HE Bernardo asks that you bring your Officer Handbooks and invite a member of the populace who is not an officer. We want to make this is an open event and encourage participation.

===================

Signoria? What the heck is that? The Signoria was a governmental body of Medieval Florence that brought together elected members of the rising middle class and the ruling nobility. It was seen as a movement towards popular access in matters of civil governance where nobles and freemen would interact to govern.

Words from our Baron and Baroness, Tariq and Elieth

Onto the Mighty Barony of the Citadel of the Southern Pass do we, Tariq and Elieth, Shayk and Shayka of these great lands send greetings!

We write today as we see the end of our days fast approaching. We have joyfully served Crown, Kingdom, and Barony over these last four years but alas, the time has come for us to step aside for a new Baron to lead the Citadel to further greatness. Before we go into retirement and take our place in Citadel’s history, however, we wish to thank all of you for your confidence in us during our tenure. Although we have been at the head of the Citadel over the last four years, we have not been alone. So many of you, both members of our populace as well as from outside our lands, and even beyond the borders of our beloved Kingdom have given us your boundless and unwavering support. It is this support and encouragement that has made it possible for us to succeed and for the Citadel to thrive. Though we lament that our time as Baron and Baroness is drawing to a close, we are joyful that we leave a successor that that is very motivated and full of new ideas that will take this Barony to new heights. We are sure that he will have the same unwavering support that we have enjoyed as we led this Barony over the last few years. We look forward to this new chapter of the Citadel and are proud to be a part of her populace.

We invite one and all to join us this Saturday, April 13th at the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Competition, Queen’s Prize and Citadel’s Baronial Investiture. There are many fine activities planned throughout the day and a fantastic feast in the evening following the investiture of our new Baron, His Lordship Bernardo dei Medici. Come and see the best that our Kingdom has to offer in the realm of arts and sciences as artisans from all corners of the land come together to compete to become the next Kingdom Champion. Poppies Fest Demo this Saturday!

Good afternoon to all,

Come out and support Citadel’s largest annual demo at Poppies Fest this coming Saturday (March 23) at the El Paso Museum of Archaeology!  This year beyond our normal Arts and Sciences display and hands-on archery demonstration we will be featuring a fighting field for both heavy and rapier fighting,  a fiber arts demonstration area and a music and drumming area.  Come out and help us to show the public what the SCA is all about!

In order to help facilitate the demo we are looking for heavy and rapier fighters as well as artisans who would like to display their work for a wide audience and people in garb to help set the ambiance.  We are also asking for people who can help with the set-up and take-down of the SCA Village area as well as folks who can help to oversee the archery range throughout the day.  Finally, we are asking for donations of snacks and such that we can stock the “break tent” with.

We look forward to seeing you this weekend!

Archery 3/16

Good morning! Due to rain,  we are calling archery today.  Please come support archery next weekend at poppies fest!

From our Baron and Baroness, Tariq and Elieth

Unto the good populace of the Citadel of the Southern Pass do we, Tariq and Elieth, Shayk and Shayka, send greetings!

We write to you as our mighty King and Queen prepare to hold the tournament to find their heirs. This grand event will be held in the Barony of al-Barran on March 9, 2019. We encourage all of you to attend and bear witness to the field of honor as the greatest of Outlandish warriors vie to serve as the next Crown of our mighty Kingdom.

We also wish to share with you the glad tidings from Estrella War. It was truly a great time despite the adverse weather that struck during the event. Citadel was represented on both the heavy and rapier fields with His Excellency taking to the heavy field and Don Carlos leading the Southern Outlands rapier army as their General. Citadel rapier fighters brought much honor in particular to the barony and they have many a fine war story to share. We encourage you all to seek them out and share a drink and a tale with them.  Citadel was also represented in the Arts with Her Excellency participating in the Estrella War Known World Choir and Monique participating in the A&S display with the Sun Dial gifted to us, Tariq and Elieth, by Lady Aveline, m’lady Monique Sir Patrick, Lady Zana and m’lady Noor.

Finally, Mighty Citadel, we must not forget that our own time as your Baron and Baroness will soon draw to a close. It has been decided that we will retire as your Baronage at Kingdom Arts & Sciences Competition and Queen’s Prize; to be held on April 13, 2019. We wish to thank those who submitted letters of intent to be the next coronet of our beloved barony as we look forward to serving the Barony in other capacities. Their Majesties have declared a polling of their populace to be held on March 24, 2019 from 11 am to 1 pm during our regularly scheduled Baronial Day and Populace Gathering at Album Park. Their Royal Majesties will be present during the polling to speak with members of the populace in order to hear their words regarding this most important selection. There will also be an opportunity to speak with the candidates starting at 10 am during a Question and Answer Session.

The coming of the Crown for polling and Baronial Investiture means that there will be an opportunity for members of our populace to be recognized for their diverse, good works for the Barony and the Kingdom. If you feel that you know someone who has contributed to the betterment of the Barony and the Kingdom, please recommend them for an appropriate award. Awards are given at both the Kingdom and Baronial level for merits in the areas of combat, arts and sciences and service. There is a large range of awards to be considered and descriptions can be found at http://wimble.outlandsheralds.org/awards_group.php?GroupID=96 for Kingdom level and https://citadel.outlands.org/history/our-awards/ for Baronial level. For Baronial level please send recommendations via email to coronet@southernpass.org. Finally, please send your recommendations as soon as possible in order to give appropriate time for recommendations to be evaluated and scrolls to be solicited.

Once again we wish to thank you all for helping us to make The Dream that is the SCA a reality.

Yours in Service,
