From our Baron and Baroness, Tariq and Elieth

Unto the good populace of the Citadel of the Southern Pass do we, Tariq and Elieth, Shayk and Shayka, send greetings!

We write to you as our mighty King and Queen prepare to hold the tournament to find their heirs. This grand event will be held in the Barony of al-Barran on March 9, 2019. We encourage all of you to attend and bear witness to the field of honor as the greatest of Outlandish warriors vie to serve as the next Crown of our mighty Kingdom.

We also wish to share with you the glad tidings from Estrella War. It was truly a great time despite the adverse weather that struck during the event. Citadel was represented on both the heavy and rapier fields with His Excellency taking to the heavy field and Don Carlos leading the Southern Outlands rapier army as their General. Citadel rapier fighters brought much honor in particular to the barony and they have many a fine war story to share. We encourage you all to seek them out and share a drink and a tale with them.  Citadel was also represented in the Arts with Her Excellency participating in the Estrella War Known World Choir and Monique participating in the A&S display with the Sun Dial gifted to us, Tariq and Elieth, by Lady Aveline, m’lady Monique Sir Patrick, Lady Zana and m’lady Noor.

Finally, Mighty Citadel, we must not forget that our own time as your Baron and Baroness will soon draw to a close. It has been decided that we will retire as your Baronage at Kingdom Arts & Sciences Competition and Queen’s Prize; to be held on April 13, 2019. We wish to thank those who submitted letters of intent to be the next coronet of our beloved barony as we look forward to serving the Barony in other capacities. Their Majesties have declared a polling of their populace to be held on March 24, 2019 from 11 am to 1 pm during our regularly scheduled Baronial Day and Populace Gathering at Album Park. Their Royal Majesties will be present during the polling to speak with members of the populace in order to hear their words regarding this most important selection. There will also be an opportunity to speak with the candidates starting at 10 am during a Question and Answer Session.

The coming of the Crown for polling and Baronial Investiture means that there will be an opportunity for members of our populace to be recognized for their diverse, good works for the Barony and the Kingdom. If you feel that you know someone who has contributed to the betterment of the Barony and the Kingdom, please recommend them for an appropriate award. Awards are given at both the Kingdom and Baronial level for merits in the areas of combat, arts and sciences and service. There is a large range of awards to be considered and descriptions can be found at http://wimble.outlandsheralds.org/awards_group.php?GroupID=96 for Kingdom level and https://citadel.outlands.org/history/our-awards/ for Baronial level. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you would like help or clarification on any of these awards. Recommendations can be made for Kingdom level at http://www.online.outlands.org/. For Baronial level please send recommendations via email to coronet@southernpass.org. Finally, please send your recommendations as soon as possible in order to give appropriate time for recommendations to be evaluated and scrolls to be solicited.

Once again we wish to thank you all for helping us to make The Dream that is the SCA a reality.

Yours in Service,

What is Largesse?

Throughout history, the generosity of the Landed Nobility has been termed “largesse”.  In the SCA, the giving of largesse by the Crown and Coronets allows for them to show that their wealth and happiness is a direct result of the wealth and happiness of the populace.  Not only is gift-giving expected of Royalty, it is a tangible symbol of their courtesy and appreciation.  It is one way to give something back to the populace and say thank you to those who have freely and willingly given their time and energy to Kingdom or Barony.

The populace of a Kingdom, Shire or Barony – the craftspeople, artisans, merchants – any and all interested, donate items that are then given away as gifts to visiting Nobility, Event Autocrats or members of the populace that have given of themselves for the good of the group .  These generously donated items benefit in two ways: the Landed Nobility have a wide and diverse variety of items to choose from to give away as largesse, helping to alleviate the financial burden that they already carry as Royalty; and the artisans have the opportunity to have exposure for their work, not only to be recognized by the Nobility and populace of their home group, but also throughout the entire Kingdom.

The best largesse items are ideally handmade or period in nature, ie: lengths of fabric, buttons; purchased ceramic and wooden plates and drinking mugs, etc. can be acceptable.  Items should be as period as possible, or at least have a medieval aire.  Items can be donated as a set and in pairs, in addition to individual items. These items are bestowed by the Landed Nobility as they see fit: gifted to other Landed Nobility, Event Autocrats, as prizes for event winners/sponsored prizes, or to other such deserving gentles.

We call upon all who would be interested in donating items to the Baronial Largesse stock.  If you would like to contribute something for Their Majesties or Their Excellencies to use as largesse, you can contact their Excellencies for guidance.  There is no limit to the number of items you can contribute. One item or many items are all equally appreciated.  All largesse received from members in the Barony need to have a label before they are given out as largesse in order for the artisan or donor to be recognized for their talent and generosity.  If the person does not wish to have their name on it, you can use “Populace of the Citadel of the Southern Pass” as the name.

Yours in Service,

Tariq & Elieth

The time of War is once again upon us!  We must rally behind our Noble King and Queen beneath the banners of our great Barony!  The time has come once again to march to the west and smite the foes of our Mighty Kingdom.  Citadel once more shall stand stalwartly in the defense of our King and Country as we teach our enemies to once again fear the warriors of the Southern Pass!  For those of you attending, please let His Excellency know what size of tent you will be taking if you have not already done so.  He is in the process of preparing the Citadel encampment map.  The sooner that you get this information to him, the better.  We are looking forward to a great event with all of you.

We would also at this time like to fill you in on some of the other happenings going on in the Barony.  Firstly, we would like to announce that Lady Zana Wind Dancer has stepped into the position of Baronial Minister of Youth.  Congratulations Lady Zana and thank you for your willingness to serve the future of the Citadel!  We would also like to congratulate m’lord Santiago Covarrubias for winning the Constable Tournament this past weekend and thus taking his place on the Baronial Retinue as Constable.  We are confident that criminals in the Barony are quaking in fear of his flashing blade!

Furthermore, we invite you all in support of our archery community to attend A Hunt for Mythical Beasts!  Join Lord James Erskine, the Baron’s Hunter, and the many archers of the Citadel as they embark on an adventure to make safe the woodlands around the Barony.  This event will include roving rounds and target archery as well as a night shoot.  Please consult the Baronial webpage or contact the autocrats, Domina Julia Alexandra and Lord Rauol de la Noue, for more information about this great event.

We are also happy to announce that the Citadel was chosen to host the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Competition as well as Queen’s Prize.  We look forward to hosting artisans from all over the Kingdom on April 13th.  There will be many amazing displays to be seen as the best of the Outlands artisans come together to compete for the honor of being the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Champion.  Events such as this are very important for the continued advancement of the arts and sciences within the Kingdom, which in turn also helps the SCA to keep with its Mission as a non-profit organization.  To this end, we encourage all of you artisans to participate with us and enter your fine artistic creations.  Please consult the Baronial webpage or contact the autocrats, Mistress Constance Warwick and Mistress Joella of Blue Lions Keep, for more information about this event.

As many of you know, we have begun the solemn task of seeking out heirs to the Baronage of the Citadel.  After 4 years of serving our beloved Barony as Baron and Baroness, we have decided to continue serving the Dream in other ways, so that others may have the opportunity to lead the Barony.  We are grateful for all the love and support we have received these 4 years from our Barony, our Kingdom and other groups in the Society.  Each of you, in your own way, have made Citadel a better place for us and have showed us what the Dream is really about.  We are sure that the successors that our mighty King and Queen choose to select will receive the same help and support to continue making Citadel great.  Thank you for allowing us the honor to represent Their Majesties and to serve you.  We will always cherish these 4 years.  If any of the members of the populace of Citadel should be interested in being considered as successors to the Baronial seat please send your letters of intent no later than February 28th to Crown (crown@outlands.org), Kingdom Seneschal (seneschal@outlands.org), and Citadel Baron and Baroness (coronet@southernpass.org).  Their Majesties Hrorek and Slaine will hold a polling of the populace at a date and place to be announced.  All approved applicants must be present for the Polling.  The Investiture of our successors will be held during Kingdom Arts & Sciences Competition on April 13th, 2019.

Baronial Arts & Sciences Night on February 11th: Pets Throughout History

The history of pets is intertwined with the process of animal domestication, and it is likely that the dog, as the first domesticated species, was also the first pet. Perhaps the initial steps toward domestication were taken largely through the widespread human practice of making pets of captured young wild animals. Eventually, a working relationship developed between the dogs and their human captors. The dog was swifter, had stronger jaws, and was better at tracking prey; therefore, it could be of great use in hunting and guarding duties. From human beings, on the other hand, the dogs were assured of a constant supply of food as well as warmth from the fire. There is indirect evidence that the dog may have been domesticated and kept as a pet since Paleolithic times, as can be surmised from the paintings and carvings that archaeologists have found in ancient campsites and tombs. In Mesopotamia, dogs that look remarkably like the present-day mastiff were shown participating in a lion hunt. Domestic pets were often depicted in the scenes of family life in ancient Egypt; hunting dogs of the greyhound or saluki type accompany their master to the chase, and lap dogs frequently sit under the chair of their master or mistress (from Encyclopedia Britannica).

Join us on Monday, February 11, 2019 at the Baronial Estate (9900 Chinaberry Drive) for Herr Johan von Horne’s class on pets throughout history. The class starts at 7 pm. We look forward to seeing you all there!
